Just working on some Christmas content for my superhero site. Found this old 3 page story drawn by Steve Dikto about an astronaut that runs into old Saint Nick from DC Comics in 1979. Time Warp Christmas

I love the end quote.

Once, flying through the firmament that the ancients called heaven, a cosmonaut proclaimed, "I see no God here! and as the myth crashed earthward no one thought to say, "Fly higher!"

For science need not destroy faith--indeed at the very limits of our progress, we like Captain Dennis Martin may rediscover a precious something--call it magic--that has been lost. end.

No I'm not saying I believe in Santa or that anyone else should.  Just that as the story said, science need not destroy faith, and if you don't see God, you aren't looking high enough.

You don't want my response on this and I'll respect that for a change.

But the backdrops peel and the sets give way and the cast get eaten by the play, there's a murderer at the matinee, there are dead men in the aisles

And the patrons and the actors too are uncertain if the show is through and with sidelong looks await their cue, but the frozen mask just smiles

I'll be honest, I am a little uncomfortable with conflation of the commercial Santa with religous revelation.  Certianly old St. Nicholas has his religous bonefides, but I'm unsure about other images, once elves enter the picture it gets a little dicey.

Don't get me wrong, I actually do believe in Santa Clause, the whole yes virginia thing and all.  But we are rapidly becoming a nation of Santanists, with our pathwork mythology about seasonal gift man, and the great toy factory collective he operates.

But I don't see much reason to bah humbug the particular strip, just thinking that perhaps you do better with the old "there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamed of in your philosophy".

Still the fly higher quote is cute, just a little out of context here I think.
