Gee, I'm glad I'm not a catholic if it means you got to agree with the Young Turk. Is he really that young anyway?

America wasn't founded on catholic Christianity anyway. Most of the Pilgrims were protestants. I have no ill will toward any catholic, but you can't set political reforms on the pope's next speech. Next week he'll change his mind and have some other ideas about this, or maybe a new pope will get in.

At any rate I bet there are more protestant republicans than catholics anyway. Not that it matters that much I don't see catholics as really ever being that strict in their religion unless they happen to be a nun. Seriously, do you know catholics that believe everything the pope says? I only know what I see on TV of course. Not a lot of catholics around my neck of the woods. I haven't talked to a catholic in person for about 20 years at least.

If you insist on going back to events predating the founding of the nation as some sort of basis for that founding, and part of that is just that 'Pilgrims were here' then this nation was then founded at least partially on the beliefs of the native Americans that were here before the Pilgrims ever boarded a ship.

Doesn't make sense right?

America wasn't founded on Pilgrims.

Look to the Magna Carta, English law and Plato's Republic for better examples of where this nation actually came from. That's far better source material than the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special.

Let me know if you change your mind and want to discuss what the Pope said.

I don't think I've ever heard the Pope refered to as a young turk before.

And really, Pope John Paul II was very much of this opinion as well.

The Church has always been very much against the idea of self worship which most materialism is (of course that doesn't prevent the Pope from wearing silk slippers, so you know, we're all human).

All that said, the Church is very used to politicians embracing them when convenient and ignoring them when not.  So, Republicans are happy to line up with the Catholics on issues of Life begining and ending, but run away on social justice issues and Democrats do the equal and opposite, so there's nothing new in the Hypocrisy of politicians on the issue either.

Honestly I don't know enough about the pilgrims to know what their view on wealth and charity, but I will say the free market views of the treasure hunters in Jamestown was something they were trying to avoid when they wound up in Massachucettes so they might not have been quite so into the idea of unregulated banking as you think (I belive they also looked down on usery so, that really hits bankers hard).

Any way, my two cents.
