This weekend, my girlfriend and I were looking for a way to do something fun and save some money. We feel like we just throw too much away on frivolous junk and eating out.

We went on a bike ride through DC, and found some things we otherwise would have missed. The best of these, we both felt, was the FDR memorial.

That's cool so you can ride bikes in DC and see all the sites, huh? I'd love to do that. So do they have good bike trails or do you have to worry about getting hit by cars?

Well, that depends on where you go- but on the whole, DC is very bike friendly.

To give you a better picture- we wanted to get into the city from Northern VA. We could have just taken our bikes on the Metro and been dropped off at the National Mall or any number of other places.

(That is probably the best way to go. If you're coming from somewhere far away on vacation- get a hotel in the suburbs close to a Metro stop. Find a Metro stop here. But remember that if you're bringing a bike on the Metro, you can't do it during rush hour or on a big holiday like the Fourth of July. Not only is this not allowed, but people will want to kill you for taking up so much space. The middle of the day and weekends however, are no problem and perfectly legal.)

But I was short on time, so we took them by car into the middle of the city and counted on finding parking. This wasn't the easiest objective to achieve, but it worked out fine in the end. One of the great things about having a bike strapped to the back of your car is you DON'T have to park right where you're going.

From there, we didn't have the slightest problem with traffic, as there was ample room along all the paths and sidewalks to ride.

The monuments are great, but DC is sooooo big and there are so many trails through the woods and urban sections that next weekend- I think we're going to go in search of exercise followed by an outdoor drink and lunch, all of this without involving a car.

Good luck!

Be neat if parking was easier. I wonder can you rent bikes?

Its a trade off ya know. One of the things that was hardest to get used to when I moved from a small town to a big city was the notion that you can't just drive up somewhere. In any big place, there are just too many people for this to ever be possible.

The rewards once one learns of alternate methods of getting around are priceless though. It is a big shift however.

I've never seen any bike rentals in DC, but ya never know. If that is the case- the Internet is the way to find it.

I have to go to DC some day. It's on my list along with visiting the Grand Canyon and Hawaii.
