Fred Thompson Mocks Global Warming Fears

Likely presidential candidate Fred Thompson has been seeking to solidify his conservative credentials with frequent online postings, including statements opposing gun control and downplaying global warming fears.

In one of his three dozen postings on National Review Online, the former Tennessee senator compared scientists who warn about man-made climate change to those centuries ago who suppressed Galileo’s scientific findings because science — like the “consensus” on global warming — had already been “absolutely decided.”

He also wrote: “It seems scientists have noticed recently that quite a few planets in our solar system seem to be heating up a bit, including Pluto. This has led some people, not necessarily scientists, to wonder if Mars and Jupiter, non-signatories to the Kyoto Treaty, are actually inhabited by alien SUV-driving industrialists who run their air-conditioning at 60 degrees and refuse to recycle.”

In another posting, he said that students at Virginia Tech — site of the killing spree that claimed 32 lives — could have protected themselves if they had been allowed to carry guns on campus.

He also criticized Congress’ recent attempt at immigration reform for failing to deal with the problem of insecure borders, stating: “A nation without secure borders will not long be a sovereign nation.”

And he praised Israel’s “restrained and pinpoint reactions” to missile attacks from Gaza, likening Palestinian militants’ actions to Canadians firing missiles every day into Buffalo, N.Y.

Thompson’s writings have been “wildly popular,” Kathryn Jean Lopez, editor of the National Review Online, said in comments reported by the Seattle Times.

“He had just the right balance of red meat and substance to feed a conservative audience.”

Thompson has also posted to the Townhall.com blog and placed podcasts on RedState.com.

The writings are seen as an attempt to reassure core conservatives that he is one of them, despite his past actions supporting campaign-finance reform and opposing federal limits on malpractice lawsuits and attorneys fees, which most conservatives supported.

“Most of the other candidates — other than an issue here or there — are trying to conceal their viewpoints in which they think they will offend some portion of the electorate,” conservative talk radio host Mark Levin told the Times.

“Thompson comes out and he is unafraid of articulating his viewpoints. He’s not trying to camouflage them.”

Zod I think you could have made a new topic out of this one. So Bill Maher loves Ron Paul. It really struck me when he suggests that the terrorist had a reason for attacking us on 911. Maher is a coward. He thinks if you cringe and hide in a hole the bad guys are going to give you a big kiss. That ain't going to happen. They'll just kick your ass blow a hole in your head and keep on going.

Deal with the terrorist with good intelligence, yes, but don't be fooled into thinking nut case terrorist don't need a reason to attack us. Radical Muslims believe everyone has to become Muslim or die. That's their belief. How can you believe our foreign policy is going to effect that type of reasoning one way or the other? All you ever hear from these jihad guys is kill, maim, the dirty American dogs, blah, blah blah. You ever hear anything remotely civil or intelligent? No. Of course not, so despite what big mouth Bill thinks, we are the good guys, and the terrorist are the bad guys. Those morons are blowing up their own country, their own people. Is that our fault too?

You know if this were a action movie, Bill Maher would be the panicky guy waving the white flag that the bad guys shoot in the head on their way to fighting the hero of the picture. He's the one you always yell at the screen sit down you moron, you're going to get shot.

you don't know what's going on in the world tim. but, that's what you get for getting all your info from Fox News and Newsmax. and please don't write back about the "liberal media" and the "liberal agenda" and all that bullshit. if the media was so liberal, we wouldn't even be in iraq. you think the american gov't. can do no wrong and that they are justified in doing whatever they want in the name of democracy. i'm gonna make a list of things that the U.S. gov.t has done over the past few decades to better illustrate my point. i'll post in a few days as i'm staying at my parents to take care of the dog while they are at the lake. they have no computer there. i'll post sunday night or monday. you seem to have been completely bamboozled by US propoganda.

America takes responsibility to protect freedom in this world. Sure the government isn't always perfect, but the general principles of freedom still exist and take real blood shed to keep the world safe for democracy. The bad guys are going to kill maim and destroy no matter what we do. The question is are we going to just sit back and watch or try to do something about it. It reminds me of High Noon with Gary Cooper.  If it were up to you Gary Cooper would have left town 5 minutes into the movie.

But the backdrops peel and the sets give way and the cast get eaten by the play, there's a murderer at the matinee, there are dead men in the aisles

And the patrons and the actors too are uncertain if the show is through and with sidelong looks await their cue, but the frozen mask just smiles
