Lots of people are wondering if the death of Marvel Comics' Captain America was just a publicity stunt or yet one more liberal political statement against Bush and the war. I can't say for sure, although I being a big Cap fan hope it's just to help boost sales and bring attention to an upcoming Captain America movie.

This is from a story in 1981 from Captain America 265-266. Just wanted to take a look at how Cap comics were back in the Reagan era.

They would have never have thought of killing Cap for more than one comic or two back then.

So long as the spirit of freedom burns bright in America's soul...Captain America will not die.  Sure was a lot different back in the 80's Cap books.

I like this panel a lot too.

So long as brave, free men live -- the eternal torch of liberty and justice shall never die. Now that's the Captain America I grew up reading. Not all this doom and gloom of Cap's demise.

Looks like I got here just in time.

It was an in-story publicity stunt to give a very pointed example of what was wrong with the Superhuman Registration Act(which is basically a thinly veiled commentary on the real life Patriot Act). It was also a way to generate publicity to sell comics and from a creative standpoint toward comic readers; 'They killed Cap, that's freakin' huge!'.

It was also pointed to in the story arc how 'out of touch' Steve Rogers is to what he's supposed to be standing for and the people he's supposed to be defending.

On a side note, I'll risk spoiling it for you since you should know by now, whether by actually reading the whole story or just a familiarity with comics, Cap ain't really dead. Someone else may be wearing the costume soon, but that wasn't Steve Rogers dying on the steps and the good Captain isn't really dead.

The Punisher is going to be the new Captain America.

Ok ruin the story for me, where is Steve Rogers? I heard he popped up in one story, but another story claimed the first story was false.

I do know that Alex Ross is going to be involved in an Invaders mini series that brings a 1940's Cap to our timeline.

Now the question is will he stay? The other question is how can he? If he stays then Cap would never be found in the ice creating a huge paradox.

Not like they haven't ret-con'ed things at Marvel- the series Exiles does nothing but. He's hiding. That was probably a Life Model Duplicate type thing that SHIELD uses so often that we saw get snipered.

If Steve isn't found in that big block of ice it simply means no Avengers were ever created and the universe will cave in on itself eliminating everything that's happened since. Ugly.

Think about what they would be saying about America if the Punisher were actually to assume that mantle....I really don't see that lasting long at all if that's actually what happens.

Right. Bad, really bad scenario. I guess I'll have to get this series.

It's a really expensive proposition to try and get everything Tim.

To the best of my ability here, looking at what I have. These are essential.

The Road to Civil War
Civil War
Civil War: Frontline 1&2
Civil War: Iron Man
Civil War: Companion

That will give you a pretty good overview of everything without going overboard. If you want to go further from there, the really good ones were;

CW: Amazing Spider Man
CW: Captain America
CW: Fantastic Four
CW: Wolverine
CW: War Crimes
CW: New Avengers

The rest are really filler for each comic's particular readers to involve their characters in the saga and not really necessary. Just so it's clear, each one of those runs between twelve and eighteen dollars so don't go too crazy.

They really need someone to gather it all up and make a regular novel out of it so people can get the whole story affordably and in one coherent piece.

i've got most of those. plus the variant covers. i really like micheal turner but alex ross is kickass. finch is pretty good too. did you guys get "Fallen Son" the death of capt. america? there was 5 issues. one with wolverine, spiderman, avengers, capt. america and iron man. also, what do you guys think of "World War Hulk?" it's been pretty good so far. have you been reading it?

I like World War Hulk ok, I still miss the old Hulk Smash version from the old days, but this is cool. Got most of the Fallen Son, got the Civil War, and will get the Alex Ross Invaders mini series. I can't afford to get all the sideline issues though that encompass these major storylines. I'll wait and pick them off one at a time when they reach the 50 cent boxes. Every comic ends up there eventually. Well almost every one. I've never seen the first appearance of Venom in a 50 cent box yet, but I'm still looking. I once got some early classic 80's X-men Phoenix books in a flea market real cheap. Dude didn't know what he had. I even got a 1968 Iron Man in fine condition.
