I wouldn't call it sympathy so much as cutting loose the poor system we have. He really wants you to consider other options without endorsing one himself. If I look for strategy here, I would have to say he's picking away at the status quo for the moment. This could be for better coverage and campaigning for third parties, picking multiple choices on voting day, or (I really hope) moving toward the elimination of the electoral college system.
